Jan Akre graduated with a degree in English from Loyola Marymount University in 1969. He was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps upon graduation, served a tour of duty overseas and completed his service with the rank of Captain. Mr. Akre received his legal education at Boston College Law School, where he was Managing Editor of the Law Review, and the Harvard Law School (Center for Far East Studies); he did graduate work at Babson College in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. Mr. Akre has been a partner in the Banking and Corporate practice at two national law firms, has been the managing partner of a regional law firm and has worked in the law department of a national bank in Los Angeles.
Mr. Akre serves as general counsel to managers of capital, usually high net worth individuals or investment bankers, and their investments, often closely held companies. His principal expertise is to develop and implement a specific strategic plan, efficiently employing available capital to achieve targeted personal or corporate objectives.
In the course of his career, Mr. Akre has formed several banks and a trust company, has served on the board of directors of a California chartered bank, has documented hundreds of debt and equity transactions, and has successfully restructured approximately 30 troubled companies in the manufacturing (basic to high tech) and service (including professional) industries. He has litigated commercial disputes and has appeared in state and federal court, including appellate and bankruptcy court; he is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Akre has also advised clients on tax issues from local property matters to federal ESOPs and probate matters, including conservatorships and will contests.
